We live in a world of demanding deadlines, calendars full of obligations, and high expectations. Weʼre often running from one thing to the next highly caffeinated, in a hurry, and without much thought to the moments in between. This kind of chaotic lifestyle leads to an unhappy, imbalanced life. Finding balance is extremely important. A life of constant movement without much thought to those movements doesnʼt allow for creativity, happiness, or imagination; it leads to anxiety, stress, and often a feeling of unease. So how do you find balance while making the deadlines, fulfilling your obligations, and meeting the goals you wish to achieve? Below are 5 tips that will help you reduce your stress and anxiety and allow you to enjoy life without feeling so overwhelmed!

1) Make time for yourself


I hear it time and time again from my clients, “I just donʼt have time for myself Kim!” And each time I tell them the same thing, “Make time!” Making time for yourself is of the utmost importance. It allows you to reassess what you want, what makes you happy, and then to plan for moments where you get to do those things. Try taking 20 minutes a day where you engage in an activity that you enjoy but feel like you donʼt have time for. For example, read a book, go for a walk, call a friend youʼve been meaning to call, take a long hot bath, etc. When you take time to relax and focus on yourself you find your center, your happiness, and ultimately yourself again. You feel renewed and recharged. So schedule yourself into your planner if you have to, but make sure in the mist of all your obligations you find time to do something you truly enjoy for YOU.

2) Reduce your stress levels


There are several ways to reduce stress. Iʼm going to focus on just one in this blog: Time Management. Time management is challenging when you feel overwhelmed. You feel you have so many things to get done, but somehow your list just keeps getting longer. The key to reducing stress with time management is focus, prioritization, and understanding where your time is actually spent. Create a list of the things you need to accomplish for the day, the week, and even for the month. Then focus on one thing at a time until itʼs completed before even thinking about starting the next task. When you try to multitask between too many things, focus and concentration are lost and the things you need to get done actually take longer because your mind is scattered. So make a list and check things off in order. If you still feel like your days are getting away from you, create a time log. Simply log how you spend your time each day and then evaluate all the wasted time you spent on say facebook, instagram, or checking your email every 10 minutes. This makes you aware of your wasted time habits and how to curb them so you can focus on the tasks that need to get done and actually complete them faster. Then low and behold you have 20 minutes for yourself to do something you enjoy!

3) Eat healthy


I know what youʼre going to say, “Kim, I work long hours with a long commute to work and I donʼt have time to cook healthy meals all the time.” Eating healthy is a lot easier than you think, it just requires you to be more conscious of your eating habits and to make a few behavioral adjustments that will greatly benefit you. First and foremost make sure to eat a healthy breakfast. You may not have time to sit down with a plate of scrambled eggs and roasted potatoes, but you can still get a healthy breakfast in. Try this protein smoothie recipe with a piece or two of whole wheat toast slathered with 2 T. natural peanut butter or almond butter and youʼll have the energy to start your day!

Chocolate Berry Smoothie:

-1-2 scoops Chocolate Protein Powder (vegan or whey)

-1/2 – 1 small banana

-1 cup frozen or fresh berries (think strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, etc)

-1 cup almond milk

-2 ice cubes

*Blend, put in a cup to go, and youʼre on your way with a healthy breakfast in hand!

For the rest of the day pack a healthy lunch if youʼre able and make sure to bring snacks to keep you energized and alert throughout the day. Think 100 calorie nut packs, Greek yogurt with 10g. of sugar or less, and pieces of fruit: apple, orange, pear, etc.

4) Stay active


You may not always be able to get to the gym but you can still make sure your body is engaged in physical activity every day. If youʼre at a desk all day, go for a walk during your lunch break, take the dog for an extra long walk after work, or do 30 minutes of yoga/stretching/a workout video at home. Daily physical activity is just as good for your mind as your body. Exercise keeps your body fit and healthy but it also gives you energy, keeps your mind sharp, and reduces your stress levels. So pack your walking shoes for work and get moving!

5) Do what you love
Untitled-1People underestimate how important it is to have a career that you love. When youʼre passionate about something, youʼre driven, focused, and committed. You go to work excited and energized because you truly care about what youʼre doing. If you are currently in a career that youʼre not passionate about I encourage you to ask yourself what you would do if money wasnʼt an issue. Then take that dream and make it a reality! If you believe in yourself and your talents you can make any dream come true. Donʼt settle for a mediocre job when you could be living a life full of passion and enthusiasm! No job is perfect but if you are doing what you love it makes all the difference in the world.
