Hi there, Creative Juicers!  We like to highlight interesting Chicago happenings here on Catalyst Ranch blog, and today we’re doing just that!  Did you spent this past Memorial Day chilling at the beach, grilling out friends, or playing a game of bean bag toss, all the while wondering, “What is the true meaning of this holiday?”  If so, you are not alone.  The significance of many holidays can get lost in the racket of retail sales and ice cream eating contests, but, of course, Memorial Day was established to honor and remember those who died while serving in the American Armed Forces.  Many wonderful organizations work to honor our veterans year round.  Today we spotlight one that is working to honor World War II veterans right here in Chicago.

Honor Flight Chicago is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing Chicago’s World War II veterans with a trip to Washington, DC for a day of honor to see the World War II Memorial.  The Memorial, which opened in 2004, honors millions of soldiers who served in the US armed forces.   In addition to seeing the long awaited World War II Memorial, veterans also visit the Lincoln, Korean, and Vietnam Memorials and, as time permits, the Air & Space Museum.

When the veterans return home to Chicago, they are greeted with a Welcome Home Celebration.  Family and friends gather along with color guards, bagpipers, bands, and thousands of volunteer and active duty military personnel.   There is one more surprise in addition to the welcome home party: a Mail Call, similar to the Mail Call that would have helped keep the troops’ spirits up during the war.  Family and friends who cannot attend in person can send a letter or card to thank veterans for serving our country.

“Our goal is to show these men and women that we have not forgotten the service and sacrifices they have made for the freedoms we enjoy today.” ~Honor Flight Chicago

The flight that departs from Midway Airport today is particularly special as it is almost the 70th anniversary of D-Day.  Quick history refresher: D-Day was June 6, 1944. 160,000 Allied troops fighting Nazi Germany invaded  Normandy, France in what General Dwight D. Eisenhower called an operation in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion. Over 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded that day, but more than 100,000 soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler.  You can view a slide show of this historic event here

Today’s Honor Flight is also special to us at the Ranch as our friend, Shelton Key, who celebrated his 90th birthday here is one of the veterans being honored.  Here a few snapshots of Shelton’s 90th birthday at Catalyst Ranch!  Thank you for your service, Shelton! Have a great trip!Shelton Birthday 1 Shelton Birthday 14
