A long awaited goodbye to the cold weather can sometimes be best said by bringing out your spring/summer wardrobe again. Nicole Dextras is an inspiration with her Weedrobes collection. The collection of work is part of an ephemeral sculptures project that links bodies to the environment.

Yucca Prom Dress

This dress is composed simply of Yucca leaves and flowers.

These masterpieces are created in about three weeks. With the use of really hearty leaves that last, Nicole is able to spread out her work. Flowers are, understandably, the last to be added.

Once complete, some of these outfits have been featured in local fashion shows, but most are retired on body forms in Nicole’s yard until they naturally disintegrate.

Camellia Countessa
This exquisite dress is made with Camellia flowers (pink),

Lilac flowers (purple), Yucca leaves (long leaves at bottom), Laurel leaves (on body).

“I am interested in the concept that my work creates no waste and no trace because I want it to act as archetypes for young designers who are struggling in an industry that is wasteful, non-renewable and causes pollution,” she explains. “My nature garments are not practical as a line of clothing in themselves but they act as a target model for the promotion of sustainable and ethical fashion.”

This coat is made completely of Laurel leaves. It’s the first “clothing” item Nicole ever made.

Nicole Dextras artist statement on Weedrobes:

Weedrobes is a series of ephemeral sculptures linking our dysfunctional relationship to both our bodies and the environment. It points the concept of environmental art into the realm of the body as politic and the hegemony of the fashion industry.

These eco-wearables are made from live plant materials such as leaves, flowers and branches and their organic structure indicates a symbiotic relationship between the body and the land. They question our attitudes toward territorial dominance, societal status and sexual identity.

Hydrangea Tournure

This dress is composed of purplish-white hydrangeas, Magnolia and Laurel leaves. This dress was used later in a fashion show.
